How Naver Is Approaching AI & Search

In recent months, South Korea’s tech landscape has been abuzz with the introduction of Cue:, an AI-driven search service powered by Naver’s latest large language model, HyperCLOVA X.

These innovations are not only transforming how users search for information but are also setting new benchmarks in the integration of artificial intelligence into everyday digital experiences.

Naver Cue:

Cue: represents a significant departure from traditional search engines, offering users a more interactive and action-oriented experience.

Instead of merely listing results, Cue: integrates seamlessly with Naver’s broader ecosystem, allowing users to perform actions such as booking accommodations, making dining reservations, or purchasing products directly within the search interface.

This functionality has been particularly well-received in Korea, where the demand for more cohesive and efficient digital experiences is high.

My first impressions of Cue: is that it is more comparable with Bing Copilot than Google’s Gemini (ex-Bard).

It’s also worth noting that at the time of writing this article, Cue: is text-based (I’ve not been able to trigger a response that isn’t just text and lists).

Cue: also appears in traditional Naver Search results on the ride-hand side, very much like Google Knowledge Panels, and it doesn’t work to replace or push traditional search results in Naver, or conflict with Cafes or Blogs.

Korean press outlets have highlighted Cue:’s potential to change the way people interact with search engines, emphasizing its ability to reduce friction in the user journey.

Reports have praised Cue: for its intuitive design and the way it combines information retrieval with immediate practical applications, making it a tool that feels as much like a personal assistant as a search engine.

HyperCLOVA X

The success of Cue: is underpinned by HyperCLOVA X, Naver’s advanced large language model. HyperCLOVA X is an evolution of the original HyperCLOVA, which was a landmark achievement when it launched in 2021.

The new version, even more powerful and sophisticated, is designed to handle complex, context-aware interactions that go beyond simple query responses.

Korean media has noted the significance of HyperCLOVA X in maintaining Naver’s competitive edge in the AI space, particularly as it faces global competition from other tech giants.

The model’s integration into various tools and services, such as the content creation platform CLOVA Studio, has been met with enthusiasm, especially from businesses and content creators who see its potential to enhance productivity and innovation.

Positive Reception and Future Prospects

The reception of Cue: and HyperCLOVA X in South Korea has been overwhelmingly positive. Industry experts and commentators in the Korean press have lauded these innovations for their potential to redefine digital interaction in the country.

The integration of HyperCLOVA X into business tools has also been highlighted as a game-changer for small and medium-sized enterprises, offering them AI capabilities that were previously out of reach.

As Naver continues to refine and expand these services, the company is expected to further solidify its position as a leader in AI-driven technology, not just in Korea but globally.

The combination of Cue: and HyperCLOVA X is more than just an upgrade to Naver’s search engine—it’s a bold step towards a future where AI is a seamless part of everyday digital life.
