Since August 2023, more than 1.6 million Russians have moved their email services from Gmail to Xmail, a platform launched by VK. The new service allows users to retain their previous mailbox name, switching only the domain to xmail.ru. Xmail can also be linked with State Services accounts and other essential platforms, making the transition seamless for users.
According to VK’s press service, around 140,000 people switch to Xmail each month. VK encourages users to access Xmail and other services via RuStore, the official Russian app store, to ensure secure access to Android applications.
The move to Xmail comes in response to changes from Google. In September, it became impossible to verify new Google accounts using Russian mobile numbers. The Russian Ministry of Digital Development has advised users of Google services to back up their data and consider transitioning to domestic platforms like Xmail.
