Roskomnadzor plans to hold exercises this December to test the isolation of the RuNet, Russia’s segment of the Internet, from the global network. According to a letter from the Bank of Russia to companies under its oversight, these exercises will occur in selected regions.
Annual Routine Exercises
The press service of Roskomnadzor clarified that these exercises are conducted annually and are not expected to impact ordinary users. The main objective is to assess the readiness of the RuNet to operate independently if it is disconnected from the international Internet due to external factors.
Focus Of The Exercises
During the exercises, Roskomnadzor, in collaboration with communications operators, will:
- Test the resilience of the infrastructure used to replace key services.
- Identify systems that rely on communication with external networks, such as services, libraries, and other online resources hosted abroad.
These tests aim to ensure the continued availability of essential Russian and foreign services under potential external disruptions.
Growth Of The RuNet Economy
The exercises come during a period of significant growth for the RuNet economy. In 2023, the RuNet economy expanded by 40%. Additionally, Roskomnadzor reported that Russia’s Internet advertising market reached 381 billion rubles in the first half of 2024.
This annual initiative underscores Russia’s efforts to strengthen its digital infrastructure against potential global Internet disconnections.
