Yandex Warns Changes In How 3XX Status Codes Are Handled

Yandex has reported that in the near future surrounding the logic of how certain redirect types are handled and reported on with Yandex Webmaster tools will change.

The redirect types specifically in question being:

  • 302 Found (Moved Temporarily)
  • 303 See Other
  • 307 Temporary Redirect
  • Meta refresh

Right now when you set up a temporary redirect, the landing page that is displayed in the Webmaster Tools dashboard does so with the status “not in search”, and the source is “in search”.

In this case, it’s the landing page that is ranked in the search results, and the source URL is displayed in the site snippet.

However, the changes: a page in the Webmaster may appear with the status “in search”, and the source “not in search”. In the search results, as before, the landing page will be ranked, and its URL may appear in the snippet.

Yandex has said:

If the site uses temporary redirects, you don’t need to change the type of redirect or do something else. We only warn you that the statuses of pages in the Webmaster and URLs in the snippet may change.

It’s also worth noting that if a temporary redirect status is used (302/303/307/Meta refresh) is used between internal pages of the host, the Yandex search results will display the shortest of the two URLs.
